Show bare, and says something dumb; asks her what her father does for a living. Without turning around she shifts her weight to him, and with her free hand she draws him to her. They do-not talk, and only afterwards do they kiss, for the first time. It is morning before he knows it, and when he awakens he feels good. Instead of the hangover he has expected, he feels renewed. Anne, asleep beside him, looks like a child; and in her age, he knows, lies part of his satisfaction. He kisses her awake and again they make love, face to face this time, and when they are finished he tells her she is exactly what he needs in his life. She smiles and says that may be true but right now she' s late for class, and after dressing quickly she rushes from the house. Later Morgan notices that she has left behind her pillow. He leaves behind the railing above the back porch, which Anne has promised to paint as her part of the project, and moves on to the second side of the house. It is Wednesday. For most of the day Dave works beside him, and they talk as they paint; Dave has a plan, would like to bring all of his friends from Connecticut out here to South Dakota, to touch and feel and taste the prairie. We'll put up tents, he says, have a week-long sheep roast, a hell of a party. Morgan agrees that it's a great idea but his thoughts remain on Anne, on last night and the night to come.
