The commencement of metal-mining carries us back far beyond the beginning of written history, almost to the very dawn of civilization. For this reason, in order to get a measurably comprehensive view of the subject, it will be best to make a short statement of the latest conclusions of anthropology, archaeology, sociology, ethnology, etc., sciences that have sprung up within the memory of living men. They all pertain to the study of man in his various relations and activities, each from a different point of view. I shall not attempt to go into them separately and in detail, but confine myself to such points as have a fundamental bearing on the subject at hand. |
