Show Motherlunge a novel 243 "Getting married!" Joseph said, "Congratulations!" "Actually, well. It's the ring you and Mom pawned three years ago. It's my ring, the one my grandmother saved for me." He wiped his nose on the back of his hand as he looked down at the ring. He broke into a huge smile. "Cool. You've got good luck, Thea." I smiled back into his happy, raining face. I considered for a moment my luck. I looked back over my shoulder at where Walter and Eli still stood together at the grave. My father had his head down and was coughing into the collar of his wool coat-or else, impossibly, he was crying. Just then Eli looked up at me. His face flashed at me like a pocket mirror signaling here. "Luck." I found my wallet in my coat pocket and gave Joseph a twenty. "Good luck," I said. I held my breath as I kissed him on the cheek and turned away. I walked a few feet back toward the grave, then turned back. Joseph was already heading toward the entrance. "Hey Joseph?" I pulled off my other mitten and held up my hand as he turned around. "But I am getting married!" His remaining teeth shone white in his mouth. He waved, turned, and kept on walking, his feet smudging a bluish trail in the snow. |
