Show Hannah Mae and the Mona Lisa 116 Mr. Morris turned to my folks, "Anyway," he continued, "I'd like to invite Hannah to come to New York to attend the opening. I want everyone to meet my favorite model. Miss Larkin has agreed to be a chaperone." All of a sudden I was standing on my feet with my hand over my mouth. Dad was trying hard not to laugh out loud. He looked at Mom and she nodded and said, "Hannah would like that. Thanks." Mr. Morris smiled. "As you probably know, New York has some of the finest galleries and museums in the world-places every artist should visit." That's when he looked at Colby and his eye twinkled again. "I'm inviting Colby to come along, as well." Colby looked at Gus and Gus looked at Mom and Mom looked at Dad and Dad said, "I suspect Hannah would like the company." And just like that, Colby was all arranged to be taking art lessons from a real artist and he and I were headed to New York City. Mr. Morris shook everybody's hand and thanked Mom for the dinner. I couldn't help myself; I gave him a hug! Thinking back, I suspect the adults had the whole thing planned out before Mr. Morris even stopped by for dinner. Colby's art lessons. My trip to New York. Colby coming along. But you never can be sure about that kind of thing. I pinned Colby's Mona Lisa on my bedroom wall, right next to his drawing of the rabbit. Unless somebody knew to be looking, they probably wouldn't recognize my eyes |
