Show THE BLACK WIDOW SPIDER George Knowlton The black widow or hour-glass spider also called the shoe-button spider appears to be generally distributed over the northern half of Utah and undoubtedly occurs throughout the state The name black widow was given this spider because of its color and because the female kills and eats the male after mating has occurred Bocause of its habits general occurrence and polsonous bite this appears -tobe the most dangerous spider occurring in Utah The tesm -usually applied to the bite of this spider Is arachnidism Like all true spiders the black widow possesses two polson glands which are located in the anterfor portion of the cephalothorax These glands in the black widow spider are sac-like and the lumen or hollow inner portion serves as Vengral lew of mactans adult female black widow spide Latrodectus FADF NAREing from Web reservoir for the venom Each gland discharges its venom through duct which opens near the end of the chelicoral claw The venom secroted by the glands haa an acld reaction possessesburning bitter taste and Is of an olly lemon-yellow color It is belleved that the venom possessestoxalbumin Which fs responsible for the systemic disturbance produced The black widow spider was believed to be unusually abundant during the dry season of 1934 more complaints of its presence and requests for information concerning it having been received during that time at the Agricultural Experiment Station than ever before Part of the interest shown may have been due to ne Teani et State No Agricuttural 57 Tasued byColloge the UiahLogan Agrieultural Station Utah Utan AbrilExperiment 1985 Digital image 2003 Beckwith Family Al rights reserved |
