Show Upon hatching from the eggs the young spiders remain within the case for varylng Intervals of time usually for days and emerge about 10 to 28 days atter tho construction of the case The young spiders at first are reddish-brown with white marks and later yellowish-striped with white and black As they become larger they take ondarker color withtinge of orange As they approach maturity they acquire more of the adult male appearance Each young spider molts seven to eight times bofore becoming adult thus passing through eight t0 nine in stars the adult being the final instar The young spiders from the egg cases become decreasingly abundant as the cannabilistic young feed upon each other Under laboratory conditions usually but one to thres spiders incage reach maturity and from one or moro Eg cases Sometimes none survive to become adult The females mature under laboratory conditions in about two months but the males usually requirelittle longer to reach maturity Control Little has been done control the spiders of genus Latrodectus other than to destroy them as found It is well to keepsharp lookout for them in barns basements sheds and undor the seats of outdoor toilets destroying the spiders and thelr cocoons when ever encountered Unnecessary exposure to the bites of this spider should be avoided Preliminary attempis have been made toward the dovelopment ofblack widow spider serum There seems to be some evidenco that an animal repeatedly bitten by the black widow develops some immunity to its venom College Series No 456 Digital image 2003 Beckwith Family Al rights reserved |
