Show 1093 This change in the boats was made about the third day. R. 2585. " BY THE SPECIAL MASTER: " Q That would be over the Utah line? " A My impression is that the Utah line is about at Warm creek, somewhat below the Crossing of the Fathers. I think our change would have been made there a little below or a little above there, not a very great distance. Most of the section of the river in Utah was made with combined units. " I think we were a better operating organization by this arrangement than when we were all barging ahead on our hit and miss. " We now had Tom and Andy Wimmer at the only working motors, and both were good men with the engines. We were able to concentrate our efforts if the boat got in trouble; we had three men to work with it, a man to row as hard as he could, or go overboard and tow from the bank, or tow from the water if that became necessary. " It was an unwieldy thing, but we were getting fairly good results. " Q Would that mean a longer boat than eighteen feet would be easier operated than an eighteen- foot boat? " A No, as a boat it was more difficult, but we concentrated three men on it; there was a unity of effort, and the advantage was from that rather than from increasing the length of the unit. A larger boat is normally much more unwieldy, of course, crossing a current. The lashed |
