Show T H E IGT F U R N A C E R E S E A R C H FACILITY IGT furnace No. I is 3 feet high, 4-1/2 feet wide, and 14 feet long (internal dimensions). It is fabricated from 3200°F hard refractory. This furnace has 31 removable panels, or sampling doors, along one sidewall to allow for flame radiation measurements or the insertion of gas-sampling or temperature-measuring probes into any part of the combustion chamber. The furnace is equipped with water-cooling tubes that can be placed either along the sidewall or on the furnace hearth to provide an adjustable furnace load. The combustion air for this furnace can be heated up to I200°F, and a fuel preheater is available to preheat low- or medium-Btu gases up to I200°F. The combustion air system is designed to allow for recirculation of cooled flue gases into the air stream, if desired, for air pollution control studies. The combustion air can also be enriched by the addition of oxygen. Figure I shows the overall furnace system. Facilities are also available to prepare combustion air preheated to about 2000°F by partial combustion and oxygen blending. IGT furnace No. 2 is 4 feet in diameter and 20 feet long. It is fabricated from 2800°F hard refractory. The combustion air for this furnace can also be heated to about I000°F. This furnace has ten 6-inch-diameter ports that allow for gas sampling, temperature measurement, and flame radiation evaluation. IGT furnace No. 3 has a 4 foot by 4 foot internal cross section and is built in sections. It can be 3-1/2, 6-1/2, or 10 feet long or longer depending on the number of sections used. It is lined with 2800°F rigidized fiber refractory to allow for rapid heat-up and cooldown. This furnace has 24 removable sampling doors along one sidewall for insertion of probes and can have water-cooling tubes inserted on the furnace hearth for an adjustable load. The combustion air can be heated to I200°F. IGT furnace No. 4 has a 2-1/2 square-foot internal cross section and is 4.5 feet long. Provisions have been made to allow for insertion of a central section to extend the furnace length if desired. It is lined with 2800°F rigidized fiber refractory. This furnace has its own attached stack and is designed to be shipped for off-site experiments. It was originally used in a study to investigate the corrosive effects of landfill gas combustion products. Fluidized Bed IGT also has a commercially available Fluidfire Model FT-8 fluidized-bed furnace. The fluidized bed is approximately 25 inches by 34 inches with a 12-inch working depth. 2 I N S T I T U T E OF GAS T E C H N O L O GY |
