When the CWA work was begun this year, we secured the services of a number of very capable men in coal research work, and the supervisory work was done by Mr._Otto .Duke, who was employed for half-time_in the department of Mechanical Engineering. Inasmuch as he was employed for part-time by the University and the University was expected also to furnish a supervisor, Mr. Duke, who was familiar with this work and available as a supervisor, agreed to devote the necessary, time for directing it with the understanding that if and when he could be paid, the matter would be taken care of. When Dr. Brighton died, his work was taken over by others in the Department, which left a balance of his salary unex- ‘ pended. In View of this, I recommend that Mr. Otto Duke be paid $500 from this amount, for the supervisory work which he has done under the CWA for five months. Action on item No. 5: On motion of Regent Hughes, the President's recommendation was approved. (4) The matter of Dr. Brighton's salary which was referred to me at the last Board meeting, I referred to Dean Leary for While it is possible that the proposal to pay his salary advice. to Mrs. Brighton for the remainder of the year might get by, yet it is very doubtful as to the legality of such procedure. This being the case, and as I am in a position to know first hand that Mrs. Brighton is very nicely taken care of from some insurance and annuity that bring her in a living income so that there will be no necessity for any suffering, I recommend that no further action be taken and his salary be not paid beyond ‘ the month in which Dr" Brighton died. Action on item 4: On motion of Regent Carver, the Presi- dent's recommendation was approved. (5) I am transmitting to you a recommendation which has been worked out by Dean Cowles and Dr. Daines and which I heartily approve. I am asking for your approval of the same.
