The acreage measurements reported in table 2 were summarized from the county reports referred to earlier, except that no county report was prepared for Bernalillo County, where the acreage measurements were based on previously available soils information. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT New Mexico has a total area of more than 77 million acres and includes a large variety of physical environments. Elevations range from slightly less than 3,000 feet above sea level in the southeastern part of the state where the Pecos River leaves the state to more than 13,000 feet at the top of Mt.
