Show AGRICULTURE UNDER IRRIGATION IN BASIN OF VIRGIN RIVER. 217 year. The annual assessment for ditch maintenance averages about 75 cents per acre. The amount of water used on crops in the St. George and Washington Field has been a subject of much discussion, but prior to 1902 no measurements were made to determine this. Through the aid of Mr. Henry Schlappy, ditch rider, a daily record of the flow of the canal has been kept during the season of 1902. The following table, which gives the daily flow, shows considerable fluctuation from day to day: Flow of water in *St George and Washington Field Canal during irrigation season of 1902. From October 15 to November 28, 1.991 acre-feet of water was used, making the total amount applied during the season 13,970 acre-feet, which gives a depth over the 1,660 acres watered of 8.41 feet, and, with the rainfall added, of 8.98 feet. |
