Show Contains the diary documenting the 1909 river expedition of Nathaniel Galloway and Julius Stone, accompanied by photographer Raymond Cogswell. Their three month journey took them from Green River, Wyoming to Needles, California. The expedition is generally considered by historians of the Colorado River to be the first that was undertaken purely for pleasure, similar to modern river runners. |

there is a heavy wind from the south it required vigorous rowing to make headway against the wind. We expect to enter Lodore Canyon tomorrow. Sept. 21. We load our boats and start off in good season this morning. A heavy northwest wind is blowing, makes it disagreeable traveling. We travel 3 miles to the Gate of Lodore and stop at the U.S. Surveyor's [U.S. Reclamation Service] camp who are surveying for a dam in Lodore Canyon for the purpose of reservoing [sic: creating a reservoir] Browns Park 4 miles. Down the Canyon we find 7 of the men drilling for bedrock. We travel 6 miles of the canyon and 3 above making 9 in all, and run a several rapids in the distance. |
