Show THE CHURCH REVIEW
PRESBYTERIAN.
VOL.3. / SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, OCTOBER 6, 1895. / No. 41.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN.
The subject for the prayer meeting next Wednesday evening will be this; What truths are taught in connection with Christ's Miracle of the raising of Lazarus? John 11:1-45.
The news from Miss Moore in Chicago is very encouraging. The physicians there unite in the opinion that surgical treatment will not be necessary. Her general health is improving, and after remaining a few weeks in the convalescents' home connected with the hospital, she expects to return here. This is a gracious answer to the prayers of the Lord's people here, which should call forth special thanksgiving to God.
What an aggravating fraud that Mr. Joseph, the pretended Turkish consul, did turn out to be, after all his pious interest in the work of Missions and the Christian Endeavor Society. Bill Nye should add him to his list of the forty biggest liars in the United States. If he should, he would be ready to write a recommendation of the others as truth-telling men in comparison with this fellow. It would seem that about the only safe course for a minister to pursue, is to consider every well-dressed stranger who calls on him for favors, a polished fraud until he can establish the contrary before a jury of twelve lawyers.
The subject of the Wednesday evening prayer meeting is published the first thing on this page, in order that the people may read over the passage relating to the subject and then bring some thoughts of their own to the meeting, to help others. If this were done, the meetings would always be interesting and profitable. The fine example set by some in this way, ought to be contagious.
One week from this morning, after the church service, will be the time for the annual election of two elders and one deacon. The elders are elected for a term of three and the deacons four years. The two elders whose term of three years has expired are Messrs Van Houten and Pierce. The deacon whose term has expired is Mr. John F. Evans.
The regular monthly meeting of the Session and the School Trustees will be held at 7:30 tomorrow evening at the usual place. A full attendance is important.
The Synod of Utah, embracing the Presbytery of Utah and the Presbyteries of Boise and Kendall in Idaho, will meet in Ogden on Tuesday evening and continues through Wednesday. It is expected that General John Eaton, of Washington, D. C., formerly president of Marietta College, Ohio, who was recently elected president of Sheldon Jackson College in this city, will be present.

WESTMINISTER.
"A few kind words, or a little forbearance, will so often open the way to a flood of sunshine in a home darkened by the clouds of discord and unamiability."
The following gentlemen have been elected as elders in Westminster church: W. Rodda for three years, Robert B. Quay for two years, Charles K. Gurley for one year. The ordination will take place this morning prior to the communion service.
A congregational meeting will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 16th to fill the offices of [deacons advocated] by the election to the session of Mr. Rodda and Mr. Gurley.
The Ladies Missionary Society will on Thursday at 2:30 p. m. consider the subject of "Persia." Please all come out.
It is "Rally Day" in the Sunday school, and the contributions there are in aid of the "Million dollar" scheme of the Presbyterian church, to clear off their debts on missions and prosecute their work with zeal at home and abroad.
Tomorrow evening the business meeting of the Y. P. S. C. E. will be held. Committees at 7:30, general business at 8 o'clock. Chairman of committees will please have their written reports ready on time.
In order to close the transactions for last session there are several reports still needed and should be bought in today or tomorrow.

|
