From 10 members this group grew to approximately 80 members by 1970 and they felt it was time to form their own organization, the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild (SAWG), based in Tucson. SAWG has been growing ever since and it currently numbers over 400 members. The purpose of the organization is to advance and develop watercolor as an important painting medium and to provide for its members and supporters as many educational and cultural benefits as are judged desirable. Each year the Guild sponsors 9 meetings with demonstrations and lectures, 4 workshops with nationally known artist/teachers, various paint-outs and 4 exhibitions: The Annual Juried Exhibition, The Desert Museum Show, The Artists' Choice Show, and The Signature Show. SAWG marks its 30th Anniversary this year. In 1974, SAWG became a founding member of the alliance of Southwestern watercolor groups known as the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies. The annual exhibition is held in various Southwestern cities on a rotating basis. SAWG is pleased to host this 1997 Exhibition at the Tucson Museum of Art. |
