History tells us that Peter Walker, recognizing the need for this kind of organization, was most influential in the establishment of the group. After much research and planning by Mr. Walker, the New Mexico Watercolor Society was founded May 2, 1969. Some six years later, in 1975, the NMWS was established as an autonomous body and has steadily grown into the organi-zation that we know today. The purpose of NMWS is to further the stature of watercolor as an art medium. In addition to this, NMWS endeavors to educate the public as to the significance of watercolor as an important, creative, permanent painting medium and to have New Mexico nationally known as an important watercolor center. The NMWS currently has more than 450 members nationwide, including professional and non-professional artists, as well as non-painters interested in watercolor. On October 29, 2001, the Southern Chapter of the NMWS held its initial organizational and membership meeting in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The chapter is actively seeking new members in eight surrounding counties. The NMWS continuously promotes watercolor painting by sponsoring monthly informational and educational meetings, on-location group paint-outs, workshops, and juried shows, to encourage members to strive for excellence. A Signature Membership in NMWS is achieved by being juried into five member shows. Membership information may be obtained by contacting NMWS, PO Box 26084, Albuquerque, NM, 87125. |
