Alas, when he tried to withdraw, his head stuck, and he wandered about the cabin, covering everything, furniture and floor, with the sticky, spilling honey. Many times and oft, the settlers had threatened the life of Dennis, but somehow they never quite got around to shoot ir:g him, hence he continued his exciting career without interruption. However, the day of reckoning finally arrived. One morning Henry Rose started out to hunt, seeking perhaps a jack rabbit, or the like , for his evenir:g meal . Shortly he met Dennis on his way to visit the tow n. Happy meeting thought Henry . This is the golden opportunity to rid the populace of this onery burro . Quickly puttirg his thought into action, he turned Demis about, driving him quite a distance down the road . Finally as Dennis trotted along, Hen!~ raised his gun and fired. Our burro fell to the ground ~ apparently dead. Wiuch elated over his deed, Henry, for getting hunt irg, irm:nediately returned home, relating to all as he went alor:g what :bad happened. In carefully chosen language, . which did full justive to the event, Henry vouchsafed that here was one blankety blank burro that would annoy the folks of Monticello no further . When the neighbors heard the story, there was great rejoicir:g, for the havoc wrecked upon the town by Dennis had indeed been very great. But the eventful day, with a 11 the discussion of the demise of Dennis, finally reached its end. The evening meal was served , and in due time folks retired to their slumber. Slowly the clock ticked on toward midnight , that weird hour when witches and evil spirits set forth to torment the souls of men. Hark l what was that? The church bell solemnly began to toll .
