Show [!he Tnird. Evil -2- By Jessie M. Sherwood At the b eginning of his career in Monticello . Dennis distinguished himself up on the mountain. There came one never-to-be-forgotten day when the miners lighted a fuse, preparing to blast some rock in the mine. Rushing to the entrance to w~ke their exit before the death dealing explosion, they found Dennis firmly established in t he small opening . Upon t:r"lying to push him aside, in an endeavor to leave, Dennis promptly let go with his hind feet, sending them backward toward the fu se . Upon another occasion, Dennis e nsconsed himself du:r ir:g the day in the cabin of his owner, resting comfortably to await his return, having planned to give him a lovirg welcome . Night arrived. George Washington Johnson reached home ti:r')ed a.n.d hungry . Forthwith Dennis kicked the door shut each and every time his master tried to open it. In this manna r events moved along on the mountain, a series of continual troubles caused by Dennis . Now if Dennis had been contented to remain on the mountain, all might have been well . But, alas, such an existence bored him. He became lonely , craving the company of the female members of society, in addition . to that of the rough and tumble men with vfu.om he associated at his own quarters. Thus it fr~equently happened he journeyed down the mountain trail to experience the excitement of town life in Monticello, to visit the various cabins, to observe births and deaths, plus all the happenings of the tiny settlement . Already these early pioneers had two evils with which to contend -- cowboys and Indians . Now the third evil, in the form of enterprisirg De nnis, descended upon them. An open door was an en..graved invitation to Dennis to enter, and sKnce his appetite craved rope , paper, cloth and food stuffs of all kinds, one can well imagine how varied were his experiences, as he travelled about, visiting now this cabin, ni:hw t hat . A sack of flow.r and one of beans were among some of the thirg s he demolished .. But perhaps thB best remembered escapade of this third evil was |
