Show Chicago and we thought we were going to be late. So fiv r ix of u had to call in and tell them we were going to be late becau e our train were going to be lat . W p nt about two week at home that time. Then we pent the re t of that fall in Florida. That wa the fall right after we got there. Then we got word we were going to go out after we got all this done. I'd been a butcher and everything else before this. I gue it wa ju t between trainings. They said we were going to be there another six months or a year or omething. Anyway, it was the next February (' 44 ), I guess it wa . I called home and told my girl, "Get ready to get married in February. I'm going to come home the last of December or first of February and I've got a ten-day leave," or something. Anyway, I come home. It was about the 20th before I got there. She had her marriage things all set up but it was on Washington's Birthday when we was going to get married. I had to go in and get. .. I'd gotten my recommend (LDS temple recommend) and I had to get a marriage license. I had to wait until the next day to get that. But we went down and were married on February 23rct. We stayed in Salt Lake in the Hotel Utah. We got a real nice room. Some captain come up to me and said, "How did you get that room?" I said, "Well, I got married today." "Well, I've been waiting here all afternoon." He said, "I guess that's tough luck." Anyway, I was home for four or five days. My wife was still in high school. She was editor for the yearbook. So she wanted to stay and graduate and finish that anyways. So I said, "When you do, come down to Florida. We'll find a place down there. There are a lot of places to live and rent," or there were. Anyway, that's how our marriage started. We had our fifty-ninth anniversary, last year. That was 1944 when we got married. 11 |
