Show FELIX . TORRE J 25,2004 first day in combat, I thought I wasn't going to make it back out. You ju t hav that in mind. You tried not to think much about getting killed or anything like that. You just cope with it the best you can. After the war, I tried to forget all about it. It just drives you nuts if you kept thinking about it. BEC: So you're say that to survive mentally during that time, you just had to forget about getting out and figure fatalistically that you were gone anyway and not think about it and just do your job? FIL: Yes, you'd just do your job. BEC: And whatever happens, happens? FIL: Yes, that's about the way you feel about it. We lived in foxholes most of the time for all the five months I was there. They took us back on rests, once in a while to clean up, but not very often. When I first got there, it was so funny. They assigned me to this heavy weapons company in Germany. All the guys got introduced: the medic, they called Doc. The veteran's clothes were so wrinkled and dirty and we new guys came with clean clothes from staging areas. Then we saw all these guys that had been in combat for months, all saggy and all that. BEC: Right. I'll bet that was a little sobering, too, to see sort of a before and after combat comparison. FIL: Yes, it was. We didn't have anything but K-rations to eat either all the time we were there. We were fighting on the front line. Do you know what K-rations are? BEC: Are they the ones in the can or the box? 13 |
