Show Wallace Baldwin February 2 20 4 WB: Yes. They tried to-I guess the typical discharge intervi w by m col n 1- I can t remember his name-and he tried to talk me into reenlisting. And I told him that th rewa no way I was going to reenlist. I wasn't interested. Of course he asked me why. I told him I didn't like regimentation. I didn't like people telling where to go, and what to do, and how to do it. I'd rather do it myself. He told me that if I would stay I would be upgraded one more grade from a Staff Sgt. to a Tech Sgt., and several other things that I don't recall at this time. FHM: Did they offer you a money bonus? WB: Yes, they did offer me a money bonus. FHM: How much would that have been? Do you remember? WB: At that time, it was probably large. I can't remember, but it seems like it was $1,000.00. I'm not sure. I was kind of arrogant at the time. I knew I was leaving, and I told him, "What part don't you understand that I'm not interested?" And he looked at me kind of funny, and I said, "There is nothing you can do, or say, that will interest me in staying in the service." FHM: Did someone explain to you that that would be going on, or did you just figure that out yourself? WB: What? FHM: When you went in to him. WB: Oh yeah. I knew what it was. It was a re-enlistment interview, was what it was. FHM: So you were prepared for it? WB: Oh yeah. I knew I was not interested. FHM: What did you do immediately in the days and weeks following when you got out? 15 |
