Show Wallace Baldwin F brua 2 2004 FHM: Did you ever serve outside of the United States? WB: After I got out of my training in Denver I went to Germany. At the training in Denver they told us that if you- the scuttlebutt had it that if you got a high grade or you were high in your class, you'd get to go anywhere you wanted. FHM: Was that true? WB: It was true. I worked my fanny off, and I was, I think, fourth in my class. And I put in- my first choice was to go to Germany, and my second choice was to go to Japan, and my third choice was to go to Nellis Air Force Base just because it was close to home. And I did get to go to Germany. So as soon as I finished my training in Denver, I shipped out for Germany. I spent three years in Germany. FHM: Were you on an air force base there? WB: I was on an air force base. FHM: Which one? WB: It was Furstenfeldbruck, which is just outside of Munich. We called it Fursty. That was where I spent approximately 18 months. And then they built a new, a brand new, airbase from the ground up at a little town called Bittburg, Germany. And I spent the rest of my time in Germany at Bittburg, at that airbase. FHM: And what was the name, just Bittburg Air Force Base? WB: Just Bittburg, right. It was interesting. When I went to Furstenfeldbruck I was assigned to the 22nct Fighter Bomber Squadron, which was in the 36th Fighter Bomber Group. And in that squadron was a group of aerobatic pilots called the Sky Blazers. And so we got to travel all over the country. I was an armament mechanic on one of the Sky Blazer planes, so when they went on their tours to put on air shows I got to go with them. 5 |
