Show w EJ.BOWE B R 2 20 I BEN: What kind of a .. .if I could, what kind of things happen d on P 1 liu? What kind of things did you ... did you ever encounter the enemy up close? Did y u en gag in an hand to hand-type fighting? WAY: We were never really close there. I did on Okinawa. But there on Peleliu I didn't get real close to them. BEN: So how was the island taken then? Was it involved with much ... was it more artillery, kind of? WAY: Well, I think it was infantry, mostly. But it was some other outfits that come in afterwards. I mean, part of the 1st Marines and I think there might have been some other groups involved afterward, before it was finally taken. It wasn't really a big island. BEN: Did you have any, I guess, bonsai attacks on there? Did anybody try to sneak in during the nighttime? WAY: No, not right there they didn't. BEN: How about that group of tanks? WAY: Well, I don't remember. Just a few of them, or something, coming across there. And I guess we had something that blew them apart or something. I can't really recall all of that. BEN: How about .. .I was reading on it. They said the temperatures got up to 115 degrees. And water conditions weren't exactly the ... WAY: Well, I can't even remember how we drank water there, then. But I don't know. It just goes back. And a lot of that stuff, I just can't recall it anymore and lot of it, I don t want to recall. 41 |
