Show GRANT J. HARRI BB: There were no cable to catch you or anything. GJH: No, we'd land and roll for a ways. BB: What did you do on the boat ride home? GJH: It was about a week. BB: Did you still fly patrols? GJH: No, we just tied the planes down and didn't fly. J u BB: During that slow ride home, did you have a chance to unwind or reflect? 26 2001 GJH: A little bit, yes. A lot of the fellows ... a friend of mine, a good LOS boy from up in Salt Lake or I thought he was, got in a poker game on the way back. During the time we were out there we couldn't spend our money, so it accumulated. They still paid us in green backs, generally. So we received our officer's pay and half again as much in hazardous duty pay. So each of us accumulated quite a bit of money while we were there. I came home with ten or twelve thousand dollars, which in those days was an awful lot of money. BB: Really? GJH: All through my Navy experience, I really hadn't spent much. I really had no reason to. BB: You had that in hard currency, aboard with you? GJH: No, most of mine was home in a bank by that time, but I still had a couple thousand on me. This fellow from Salt Lake got in a poker game and lost everything he had on the way back, poor guy. That's what was happening all through the ship, poker games, night and day, night and day. Then we got back in Seattle and went out and found out that boiled eggs and fried eggs were good. They'd been very strong aboard ship. 90 |
