Show MAR: an Angelo had eighty-thousand people. o it was a good- iz d t wn. WIN: So there were movies and entertainment to be found in an Angel . MAR: I got involved in intermural sports and a lot of stuff when I got there. I play d a lot of softball, football, bowling, golf and all those kinds of things. WIN: It sounds almost like a country club. MAR: Yes, pretty much. Then I moved to facilities inspections, like the public health department, where we'd go check restaurants and things like that. That was another part of my work and I also did small animal care. We ran an animal clinic for pets. WIN: So was this all at the same time or were these successive duties? MAR: We would usually rotate them about. They have us one place or another for about four months and rotate us through them. WIN: Did you enjoy that? MAR: I did. I loved it. WIN: Did you serve there the whole time you were in the military? MAR: No, no. I met my wife there, just after I got there. We got married in 1976. Karen Benstrom. Her dad was a retired chief master sergeant in the Air Force. So she was an Air Force brat. She was down living with her sister while her sister's husband, her brother-in-law, was in Thailand. He was also Air Force. I met her and we wound up getting married. Then we went to Iraklion Air Station, Crete, Greece. [Editor 's note: Iraklion Air Station was a non-flying United States Air Force facility located ten miles east of the city of Iraklion in the village of Gournes, in the north central section of the Greek island of Crete. The base, established in 1954, was closed in 1993.] It's an island in the middle of the Mediterranean. 13 |
