Show KENNETH BUTLER February 23, 2004 KB: Port of Embarkation. From there we got on a plane and flew across the Atlantic· landed in the Azores, refueled, and made it to Casablanca. It was French Morocco in those days. And that's my first experience overseas at a city that wasn't as nice as the cities in the United States. It smelled so bad that I got sick to my stomach, and so did everybody else on the airplane. FHM: And what year would that have been? KB: It was 1944. FHM: Were you married at the time? KB: No. FHM: You were single? KB: Yes. FHM: Okay. Go ahead and explain-could you tell what the Azores is? KB: What's that? FHM: You went to the Azores, you said. KB: The Azores is an island in the middle of the Atlantic. And so that was a fueling stop. FHM: And what kind of plane did you go on? KB: Going across the Atlantic we were in a C-54 cargo plane, but going from Casablanca we were in a C-46. FHM: And what kind of plane was that? KB: It's a cargo plane, a small two-engine plane. And we flew from Casablanca, landed at Tripoli, got refueled there, went to Cairo, Egypt, and we stayed there for a day or so. Then we flew from there to Abadan in Iran, refueled. The temperature was 13 5 so we were glad to leave there. We made it to Karachi, India. At Karachi, I had my 21 st birthday. 5 |
