Show REEDCHRI TM 1 R II 2 02 BB: Okay, because the very first day, you said you r picking up gun ff f d ad Americans, right? When did you start receiving artillery? Did you ever get sh ll d on Saipan? Were you ever the other side of what you were doing? RC: They shelled, but they were never close to us on Saipan. BB: So Saipan for you was just very tough work, tiring work, but no immediate danger of enemy, except from maybe from the air? RC: Yeah, they dropped a few bombs around. BB: Would you camouflage your guns at all? RC: We didn't have time. BB: Now the gun, you said, has a split base. They don't have wheels, right? RC: No, it had two wheels on them, yes. BB: Oh, so it does have wheels. So you could bring them back together, and then move it. .. RC: We had caterpillars there, track outfits. BB: Okay. How many days before you were able, in Saipan, before you were able to move it? You were on the beach for the first day ... RC: Then we kept just ... there was the 4th Marine Division there and then the 2ih Army Division was in the middle and the 2nd was over on the east side. We supported all three of them, if they needed it. We moved them around. BB: So you were moving quite a bit, then? RC: Yes. The first couple of days. BB: So you got off the beach, at least, and started kind of changing there. RC: Yes. 55 |
