| Abstract |
Christmas (b. 1919) discusses family, schooling, the Depression, farming, and life in Spanish Fork, Utah. He joined the National Guard in Feburary 1941 and was called to active duty in March. He was first sent to Camp Roberts, then San Luis Obispo, and Escondido, California, for training. He was transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington, for more training before shipping to Hawaii, where the training continued. He was assigned to the 222 Field Artillery (later the 225th FA), 3rd Section, D Battery in the 40th Division. He participated in the invasion of Saipan, and battles at Leyte, Mindoro, and Okinawa. He provides a description of his combat experiences and duties. Christmas returned home in October, 1945 for discharge. After the war he farmed in the Spanish Fork area until 1988. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 106 pages. |

Show RED HRI TM 1 R H 2 2 RC: Oh everyone s sick of training. BB: Were you wanting to get involved? Did you want to get ov r th r and d something? RC: Oh, that's what we wanted to do. BB: The quicker you can do that the quicker you can come home, I guess? RC: Yes. BB: So from California, in Yakima, then, not so much different than what you'd been doing before? RC: No. BB: Just a different location? RC: You're right. BB: More hot, more dirt, that kind of situation. From Washington, did they keep splitting you from there or did you kind of stay together at that point? RC: No, there were a few that went to Washington. After we got to Yakima, at Fort Lewis there was quite a bunch went out, from different outfits. BB: At this time, are you part of the 222nd7 RC: Yes, we were 222nd. BB: The 222nd Field Artillery was your ... RC: With the 40th Division. They shipped us there back to Pittsburg, California, and we stayed there for a little while and then we shipped to the Hawaiian Islands. BB: Did they give you a leave between going overseas? RC: No. That's what I said, I never did get any kind of leave. I got an overnight pass a time or two, but no kind of a leave whatsoever. 33 |
