| Abstract |
Kemp (b. 1925) describes his childhood, education, and employment in Murray, Utah. He joined the Navy in1943 and received basic training at Farrigut, Idaho. He joined the submariners and was trained in New London, Connecticut. He describes his training, upon completion of which he traveled through the Pacific to Australia where he was assigned to the Sea Robin. He describes his activities, duties and tours aboard the sub. He was discharged in April 1946. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 89 pages. |

Show SHIRL D. KEMP FEBRUARY 9, 2002 SDK: They had some really good USO clubs there and lots of girls would come in. We danced and so we had a lot of socializing. It was just a good fun place to be if you had liberty. BB: Were there a lot of Americans at Perth? SDK: Yes. There were a lot of us around. BB: Did you ever get invited to eat at a local's home? SDK: No, I never did. BB: Were you anxious to get aboard a submarine? SDK: Yes, I was. I wanted to get on duty and practice my skills and get qualified. BB: Did you feel like the war was coming to an end by that time? SDK: No, not at that time. This was in February. Well, it was four months before that, so I really didn't. I felt like it was hot and heavy at that time. BB: So you mentioned the Sea Robin came in. What month was that? Was that February? SDK: February is when I went out on it. Yes. It came in the last of January I believe. I think it's in that history. The dates are a little foggy after so long. BB: That's okay, I just wondered if you remembered the season of the year really. But so the guy you replaced was sick with something the whole time he was there? It was something he didn't get over? SDK: No, actually he came down with what we called a drip, which is what they thought was gonorrhea, but it wasn't. It was some other kind of infection, apparently. Anyway, they took him out for a while. I saw him later on and he wasn't-! knew him quite well. I didn't think he had that problem, but you never know. There was lots of prostitution over there. So, anyway ... 40 |
