Snow (b. 1926) recalls his Utah youth and describes enlisting in the Navy in 1944. He took his basic training in Farragut, Idaho, then was sent to Bremerton, Washington. He was commissioned on the USS Metcalf and served in the Pacific until 1946. Interviewed by Winston Erickson. 33 pages. |

Show Charle D. now 21 ebruary 200 was fit and certainly to train us because we were just green farm boy and sch ol boy on our first experience away from home, many of us. WIN: Just thrown together. CHA: Yes. WIN: So the Metcalf was brand new. CHA: It was brand new, yes. WIN: Took your first and its first trip, actually, to San Diego. Did you stay in San Diego long? CHA: We were in San Diego a little over a month. We did torpedo training. We did aircraft training. I did some training of people on 20-mm guns. I was proficient at that. They were short instructions, and so at one of the training stations I went to, why, the two weeks we were there I did some of that work. That was independent of the shakedown crew prior to that. WIN: Okay, you stayed how long in San Diego? CHA: Oh, it seemed like a month to six weeks. I could give you exact dates if you want them. WIN: You got that all in within a month, all that activity. CHA: Yeah. WIN: You were pretty busy. CHA: We were busy, and we worked hard. It was during that time that we were having torpedo practice one day, and one of the torpedo's control went wild, and it didn't get the course that it was set on. At the time I was just filling in as a lookout on the bridge, port forward lookout, and I happened to see that the torpedo was going wild, so I watched it. 7 |
