| Abstract |
Robertson (1920-2009) attended the University of Wyoming and joined the National Guard Calvary Unit, which was activated in February 1941. He was trained to fly the B26, A20, and A26 aircraft and was assigned to the European Theater. He served with the Ninth Air Force, 115th Bomb Group, 67th Squadron at Braintree in Southern England. He was shot down on Christmas Eve 1944, and held in Barth, Germany, at Stalag Luft One, which was later liberated by the Russian army. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 104 pages. |

Show REECE B. ROBERT ON M R H 7 2002 REE: Oh yes. Those French they liked those American cigarettes. BEN: Okay. Coming back stateside, where did they take you? Did you come into th New York harbor? REE: BEN: REE: BEN: REE: BEN: REE: I guess it was New York. The Statue of Liberty, did you pass that? No, I don't remember that. Was there a welcoming committee, any kind of band for the POWs at all? No. I brought a rifle back with me. You did? A German one? No, an Italian one. In France they have what they call the FFF, Free French Fighters. A bunch of young punk kids. I think they were more juvenile than anything. They said they were looking for the boss, "Where's the boss?" One of these guys had this Italian rifle. I said, "Hey, you want to sell that?" So I gave him a carton of cigarettes. This was before I went down, of course. BEN: Before what? REE: Before I got shot down. How I ended up with that rifle, I'll never know, because they normally would have taken that away from me. But at least, anyway, I got my rifle and they come out with my rifle sticking out of my bag there. So I was afraid to bring over any ammunition, afraid they'd really give me a lot of trouble. But the best bargain I ever had. BEN: Wait. You lost that after you were shot down, right? 91 |
