And then after our basic I went to Camp Pickett Virginia, for about two or three weeks, and up to Fort Snelling, Minnesota, for about four months, and Fort Ord, California, then Camp Stoneman, California, and then over to the Philippines. So I got to travel quite a bit. L UK: Were you able to make friends during this training period, or was everyone being shipped around that ... ? KEN: Yeah, more or less shipped around because, I guess, the longest I knew anybody was about four months. So I didn't develop any lasting friendships. L UK: So after your training you were sent to the Philippines. What was it like? What were the Philippines like for you? KEN: I enjoyed the Philippines. The weather was the thing that was most aggravating. It rained just about every day, and hot and humid. But I was stationed at AF West PAC PP and PD which stood for Armed Forces Western Pacific Publications Depot. We printed all the publications for the Western Pacific Command. But I was just a supply clerk, and our small outfit only had about forty personnel. And most of the people I worked with at the printing plant were civilian Philippinos, and I got along very well with them. The first week or so I was there the Philippino people, when we went out, when we had to go out, kind of looked at us askance--! mean the Japanese American soldiers. They were wondering how come the United States was at war-we're at war with Japan and then we had the Japanese American soldiers. But, after awhile, they knew that we 6 |
