And I a on t p n iling r tng 11th 1111r un1 h ets when the news cam that th y h d b n1b d J p n. plane had taken off from Iwo. un ut l, t r th r th BBL: Really? CON: Or Tinian. Anyway, we were involved som way. Wi hI h d b tt r memory. But that was a big day. 'Now we're goin home· goin hom . wm ny hours you got?" "Never mind, we're goin' home. But I remember w d get up g t work and stay in this plotting thing for a full shift-ten/twelve hours, sometimes long r depending on who was sick and whatnot and one morning somebody said We v got eggs." Ah, we'd had eggs. Well the eggs we'd had were canned eggs the old C-ration kind. "No, we got eggs." And it got to the point where nobody would ever go eat with excitement because it was just the same old yuck, you know nothin'. And this morning we got off work early, early in the morning and I think we were one of the first bunch of guys that got into the kitchen and they had ham or bacon and eggs, sunny side up, anyway you wanted 'em. They were cracking them right there (laughs). Oh, that was a thrill. ''Hey, we got eggs!" "Oh, yeah." And then pretty soon the whole kitchen was full of people waiting for eggs. We'd line up, "How do you want 'em? Go down by the stove." And the cook would cook them right there while you waited. That was a real, a real morning. After that the food got pretty good. They were finally getting ships in with food and that was near the time to come home, can't remember. BBL: Any shrimp? They bring you shrimp in? 36 |
