| Abstract |
Howard (b. 1922) talks about family life and growing up in the Depression. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps and was inducted in 1942, taking his basic traing at Miami Beach, Florida. Having had pre-war experience as an aircraft mechanic, he was assigned to the Mobile Air Depot at Buckley Field near Mobile, Alabama. He was shipped to the Pacific in 1943 and describes being on the USS Sea Corporal when it was attacked by a Japanese submarine. He was assigned to bases in Australia, the Philipines, and also served on a small airstrip on Horn Island. 41 pages. |

All you have is an engine and an idiot riding in the seat (laughs). But it uld go. I used to win a lot of hill climbs with that and a lot of other races. JEA: It' a miracle that your still talking about it, Dad, when you listen to all the stuff that you did. Unbelievable. ROB: Well, it was a lot of fun. BBL: Well, any other t~oughts on World War II you d like to add or any stories before we conclude? ROB: World War II. Well, let me think. Well, can't think of anything. I know it was really a grateful nation that we were able to persevere and I'll say that this country pulled together. You never-nobody quarreling, everybody pitched in. The small arms plants-the out put of our production. The people at home won the war for us. We out-produced them. We didn't have the best but what we had, we had a lot of it (laughs). Our tanks weren't a good as the German's, but we had a lot more of them. I think the country, it was a good-well, in a way it was good-the country really pulled together and did a good job. BBL: Well, I want to thank you for your interview today but I wanted to say that I appreciate the fact that-I know Uncle Sam was biting at your heels, as you say, you still did what you had to do you still sacrificed to go do this and you didn't really 40 |
