Burnham (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Blanding, Utah, and describes his basic training as part of the 17th Airborne Division shortly after Pearl Harbor. His unit landed in Naples, Italy, in March of 1944, and later fought in France and Germany. He was mustered out of the service in 1946. 48 pages. |

Show Owen W. Burnham WIN: Okay. So they loaded you up aft r you 11 d up int tr in off from Logan to Fort Douglas. You went to ort Dougla and u t r d you did, but you checked into the army. Where did they send you? t r OWE: Well, in a way that I've never explained rationally I hadn't decid don any particular thing or branch that I wanted to do. And one day they had a very attractive sharp, paratrooper who was a lieutenant who gave us an orientation. And three of us from Blanding--my cousin Milt Rogers, and my friend Lark Washburn--somehow we had ended up at Fort Douglas from all different directions at the same time. WIN: Really? OWE: And we looked at each other and we said, "Let's look into that?" So we signed up. And I can't explain it anymore than that. And then we went from there on a train to Camp Tocoa, Georgia. I think it took six days. Camp Tocoa was kind of the reception center for the airborne, and that's where that started. WIN: So you went to Georgia for airborne training? OWE: Yes. WIN: Did that include boot camp, basic training? OWE: Yes. We were perhaps a little different. They were forming the 17th Airborne Division then, and we became a part of a unit. So our basic training was part of that unit, not just the basic training. The unit we stayed with was the 51 7th Parachute Infantry Regiment. And that was, at that time, part of the 17th Airborne Division. And we had, I guess it would pass for boot camp, at Camp Tocoa for awhile. And then we went to 17 |
