| Abstract |
Burnham (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in Blanding, Utah, and describes his basic training as part of the 17th Airborne Division shortly after Pearl Harbor. His unit landed in Naples, Italy, in March of 1944, and later fought in France and Germany. He was mustered out of the service in 1946. 48 pages. |

Show Owen W. Burnham u t 2 WIN: It's not that big of a town. OWE: I guess at that time 800 900 or 1 000 peopl . And v ryon pr tty 11 everyone else. And I had quite a number of friends my age in elementary and high school. WIN: So what kind of activities did you engage in as friends in the community? OWE: Oh, we were very much into sports, particularly basketball. That was the great sport there. We really didn't play much football until later. And baseball was quite a popular sport. WIN: So, you'd get a group of boys, and maybe girls, and play basketball? OWE: Boys, as I recall. WIN: And did you play at the school, or did you have outdoor hoops put up? OWE: Both. WIN: Did they allow you in the high school to go in just to play during the summer, or during the school year when school wasn't in? OWE: No, I don't recall much of that. There was also the church basketball. It was called the M-Men Basketball Program. There was quite a lot of activity there. WIN: Did you go to Monticello to play teams then in that organization? OWE: Oh, yes, that was the great event of the season was to play Monticello, and we played Moab. WIN: Oh, you went clear up to Moab to play? OWE: Yes, and to Green River.
