BECK: This is an interview with Ruth Messick. Am I saying that right? RUTH: Yes. My husband was a mess sergeant (laughs). Isn't that funny. BECK: He really was? RUTH: Yes. BECK: Oh, I thought you were just saying that. RUTH: Yes. That's where I met him, in the mess hall, the first time I ever saw him I, uuhhhhh! BECK: Ruth, that's funny. Okay. All right, Ruth, let's start with when and where you were born. RUTH: I was born in Brigham City, Utah, on December 15, 1923. BECK: What was your family doing in Brigham City? RUTH: My father, well, when I was growing up, part of it was during the Great Depression, so he had owned a motor company and a cafe, but he lost them and he was a truck farmer. He had acreage where he grew crops and sold them. But then, in 1938, he started a motor company. He was dealing in used cars; he had three used car lots, and then the motor company. BECK: When you say motor company, what do you mean by that? RUTH: Well, he was a dealership. He sold Plymouth cars and GMC trucks. BECK: And then he also had some used car lots? |
