Show DEAN WINTERS J L 17, 2 1 us aboard a ship and took us back to our main base back at New Hebrid . arl n and Roosevelt found out there was a ship heading, going back to New Zealand, so he said "We're loading aboard." So we went to Wellington. We was supposed to be there a while, but we was only there two days. Loaded back aboard ship and come back to New Hebrides (laughs). BEC: One second. That's signaling the end of this side. Let me flip these over. END OF SIDE A DEA: We went back to the camp and it was mildewed, the floors were rotted. We had to build a new place before we could stay in it. We did have a mess hall and a galley that we could prepare our food. That was the main thing, then, was food (laughs). BEC: Yeah. DEA: And instead of fixing it up we moved down to Noumea, New Caledonia, and built a camp there instead. We were there for quite a while. That's where Carlson got sick and he was taken out as our commanding officer and another man by the name of Shapley took over. Now they called us Carlson's Raiders and Shapley's (laughs), well, shit heads, I guess it was. BEC: Really (laughs)! DEA: So, then we went to Bougainville. But, in the meantime, I had malaria, I had hepatitis, yellow jaundice, and I had dysentery. I wasn't very fat. I lost all 22 |
