| Abstract |
Ellsworth (b. 1918) entered the National Guard and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1940. He trained as an artillery officer and became a communications officer in an artillery battalion. Initially scheduled to go to the Philippines following Pearl Harbor, his unit ended up in England, landing on Utah Beach in July of 1944. Ellsworth recalls the move through France and Germany, entering Dachau, serving in the occupation forces in Europe, and being discharged in 1945. Less than a year later he rejoined the army and was sent to Japan, where he remained for four years. He also served in Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, before returning to Utah and Fort Douglas. He retired in 1964 and was recruited by a reserve unit, serving in various places, including Israel. He retired from the reserve in 1983.37 pages. |

Show LM LL WO T WI : Mu t have made you£ 1 r al good huh? ELM: So I went, really from Fort Dougla in 1941 back t kind of an interesting circle. WIN: When did you retire fully from Fort Douglas? ELM: The 29th of February, 1964. WIN: In 1964. Then what did you do? rt ugl t r tir . it ELM: Well, I was recruited by the commander of the new reserve unit the 96th AR OM. to be the training guy and the unit aid. So I entered into civil service. A year later they inactivated the unit; well in 1966, almost two years later. In the meantime my recruiting general had been moved, Mike Kaufman, and another general was in charge. I m convinced that they inactivated the unit to remove that commander. I don't know if anybody has ever confirmed it. Well, then I was on Reduction in Force notice, so I ended up working for-well, it was then called the Desert Test Center which was an operational CB (chemical biological) testing organization. They had test programs in Alaska, Panama, Dugway, and other places. I became a security officer in that organization for a while. General Westmoreland came to town and told us there were no plans to move us to Dugway, which had always been the rumor. Three months after General Westmoreland retired we moved to Dugway. So I spent eight years at Dugway doing technical information administration, and security; all of them very difficult out there.
