Show CALVIN WARDROP BR R 2 2 2 BBL: Keep going, sure. CAL: Okay. From there I went to Treasure Island in akland- an And they had had a world's fair there and converted it into a large Naval tation. It wa hug . I was being trained to be a gunner on the Merchant Marine ships. And the Merchant Marin ships mostly are private owned ships and they act as supply ships for the Navy. And they are undergunned and undermanned. So they were easy targets for the Germans or wherever they were in service; the Japanese, I guess, too, in the Pacific. And so I decided- well, it was really a coincidence (laughs]) I was coming through the pay line and the officer that was behind the desk at the pay line asked-1 don't know why he picked on me out of all the men that were going through to get paid-if I would like to work in the office (laughs). And I said, "Yes, I'd like to consider that." So he said, "Well, come back this afternoon and I' ll tell you whether or not we can use you". So I was accepted to work in the office and my officer, he was a chief petty officer-a gunner who was training the men-when I told him I was being transferred, he was really very angry and he said some unkind things. He told me I was just a woman (laughs). BBL: Oh, really? CAL: Yes (laughs). He said, "You're just a WAVE." That's what the women were called. Anyway, I went into the office and worked there and I decided to take the test for the Navy officer training school. BBL: CAL: BBL: DOR: BBL: Hello. Do you want to shut this off a minute? No. I'm Becky Lloyd. Happy to meet you. I'm Dorothy. Would you like to join us? 7 |
