| Abstract |
Silvey (b. 1921) was born in Natividad, Pangasinan Province, Philippines. She was in high school when the Japanese invaded the Philippines. She recalls her next door neighbor, a barrio lieutenant, being tortured for information. She joined the Luzon Guerilla Armed Forces and served for about five years. After the war she came to the United States and attended the University of Utah. 26 pages. |

I had my evening dress, or something you know and her com s a relative of mine, "Oh try this. Try this dress," and if it fit me 'You want to wear it? ' f course I do." Things like that. We had help. Relatives can be very helpful, and they helped me get through college. BEC: Yeah, you got through. ZEN: Uh-huh. The summer before, how did I did it: It was the same thing- it was not the same thing-! think my parents helped me get the money to Manila, for college, part of the college, during the summer. Oh no! I was teaching already. BEC: Was this after the war? ZEN: Yeah. BEC: Yeah, this is after the war. So you had already graduated from college and were teaching? ZEN: Yeah. BEC: And so you were teaching in Manila? ZEN: No, I was teaching in the province, in the town near where I lived, close by. BEC: Did you go to college in Manila? ZEN: Yeah, I earned most of my college in Manila, and there were other colleges in the town where I lived and I finished there. BEC: Oh. I see. ZEN: Yeah. I go there in Manila. I did that in the summer and take some summer classes, things like that. 16 |
