| Abstract |
Collipriest (b. 1926) was raised in Salt Lake City by his widowed mother. He had an older brother who was a pilot in the Navy. Collipriest was drafted in 1944 and sent to Manila. Shortly after he arrived there, his brother was killed in action. As the last surviving son of a family, he was no longer eligible for combat duty and so remained in Manila as a member of General Baker's staff. Collipriest's godfather was an aide to General MacArthur, and he relates some personal anecdotes about the General. After the war, Collipriest stayed in the Air Force Reserve and retired as a Colonel 39 pages. |

Show Harold D. Colliprie t Jun 10, 2000 WIN: So you were young enough you didn't really notice a change? HAL: No. WIN: What schools did you attend here in Salt Lake? HAL: My elementary schools: I went to the Oquirrh School, and then Bryant Jr. High School at the time. I graduated from East High School, and after the war I graduated from the University of Utah. WIN: In your Oquirrh school days do you have any remembrances of teachers or favorite friends? HAL: Well, I had friends but I don't recall the teachers except for one. I remember one who was named Mrs. White, and that's the only name I can recall from my elementary years. I didn't go to kindergarten there. I went to kindergarten at Lafayette school, and first grade. I believe it was 3rct grade to 6th grade, at the Oquirrh. WIN: Did you find that any particular subjects interested you more than others, or did you just take school as a necessary evil? HAL: A lot of that. Well, I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed geography. I remember I thoroughly enjoyed geography and reading and English. Also, art was enjoyable. But it was just a general, I guess, elementary schooling that I had. WIN: Did you live in an apartment or ... HAL: Yes, we lived in an apartment. WIN: So, you probably didn't have garden tasks or outdoor tasks assigned to you? HAL: No, I worked in-my first employment was in the Belvedere Hotel Apartments. 4 |
