W came ar und · lx:nd, r out of a group of trees, and there we saw the main body of the gr up th~ t \ 'd been in. We stopped and asked what was going on. They said, 'WelL we' re n gotiating y ur r lea e." We figured there was no sense of us being by ourselves anyn1ore, so v s ttled do\\ n and \vai ted. Then at about ten o'clock at night they rousted us out and started us marching again. And we marched most of the night. We came to a farm and they bedded us down in this ar a. We were there for, oh, I guess a couple of days. On the 26th of April we heard a run1bling. There was an American tank that ca1ne in and surrounded us and told us that we were liberated. Our guard s, the German guards, we didn't have any. So, we were taken over to this little village. It was Bitterfeld, Germany. And we crossed the bridge were liberated by the 1041 h Timber Wolf Infantry Division. As we marched across the bridge there was a truck that came by and tossed us some Krations. That was kind of a delicacy to us and we devoured those quite readily. That night 1ny buddy and I decided we'd- we wondered what it would be like to walk around town as free persons. So we went out and were just walking around and a soldier came up and wanted to know how we were treated. And we gave him the standard cliche answer, "Not very often." And, he said, "How come?" And we said, "Well, we didn't get much to eat." He said, "Are you guys hungry?" And we said, "Well, yeah." So, he said, "Come on, we'll get you something to eat." And he took us over, he was on duty and he saw another soldier and called to him and told him to come over. And he said, "These two guys are hungry. Take them over to the mess hall and see what you can find." 33 |
