| Abstract |
Dorothy Smith (b. 1923) recalls her childhood in Salt Lake City and working in the Arms plant shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She enlisted in the WAVES in October of 1944. She worked in the laundry, did secretarial work, and became a Teletype operator at Ream's Field in San Yisidro. She was discharged in November 1945. 26 pages. |

Show DOROTHY N.V. MITH R DOR: BEC: DOR: Yes. Later he worked at the Deseret Press. So your family was pretty hard hit, then during that time? Yes. 1 20 2 BEC: You said earlier that your mom wasn't working at the time you were born, but did she then work later when you were a- DOR: When I was about seven or eight or something, it seemed like she went to work, just washing dishes, whatever could be got because everybody was starving, it seemed like. In later years my mother worked as a seamstress. BEC: It was a tough time economically. Now I'm wondering if during high school you talked at all, your family talked at all, about the things that were happening in Europe? That Hitler was invading Poland, and that the Japanese-did you talk about that at school? DOR: I don't remember it. BEC: So you were out of high school when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, December ih, 1941. DOR: Right. BEC: What were you going to do after high school? DOR: Well, I was too young to get some of the jobs so I was still cleaning people's homes for board and room. BEC: So you weren't living at home at the time? DOR: At the time that the war started, I guess I was visiting. I don't remember that part. So much detail that-! did work in homes and then when I became eighteen, I worked for American Linen Supply Company. I got whatever I could get. 7 |
