Show B. Ward Turner converted it to a troop ship. WIN: Was it a nice ship, or were you really crowded and miserable? Janua 17 2002 WAR: Well, it was pretty crowded. You'd have the length of the ship over you in bunks. Some of them had three here, and here, and here. WIN: About five? WAR: Only three, is all they had room for. So we were lucky. WIN: I've heard of some five deep, from top to bottom. I guess it all depends on how high the ceiling was. WAR: WIN: WAR: WIN: WAR: That's right. But we got into the port along the Union. It was dark. Is that Norfolk? Newport News, is it? Oh, Newport News, okay. It's just down the coast there. Yeah, but anyway, I don't think the guys on the ship knew much about that. We were all lined up around the ship. You could see the lights, but you couldn't get in the port-with the line. I'll tell you, that was one night you didn't sleep. WIN: So you got in close, but you couldn't come in until daylight. So you just had to watch the lights from the------?-----, or something? WAR: It felt pretty good though, to see America and some lights. WIN: So you landed in Newport News. Did they immediately put you on a troop train? WAR: Yeah, they kept us there two or three days, and issued us all that stuff that they needed to there. They fed us pretty good too. We had some food that we hadn't eaten in a long 46 |
