Show LLOYD MCCLEARY u u t 2 20 1 or four days away- you know, it s like 80 90 kilometers. Anyway th y r g ing t Salzburg! Well, the war wasn't anywhere near over and we weren't in Salzburg! This is lik the first or second of May. They arrive in Salzburg and nobody's going to bother them. You know, they're American soldiers and nobody's going to screw with them because the Americans are coming. They are sitting in the street in Salzburg when we arrive. And I found two of the men, from my company, in the street in Salzburg when I got there. Yeah. That's a true story. JOE: Wow. I bet they were happy to see you. LLO: Yeah. There were a lot of those kind of things. There was a guy, I'm trying to think of his name - he was a real screw off. He was an alcoholic. You know the type. He didn't do anything, was always in trouble. We called him "Genovich" or something like that. Anyway, he would drink raw alcohol. I don't know how they'd get that, but he would get drunk. Anyway, we were in a little town- and I can't even tell you the name, the time, anything - it was just in one of those times when the Germans would run us out of a town and then we'd have to re-take the thing, and then they'd run us out, and we'd re-take it. Well anyway, the last time is when we were heading for the Moder River. We were in a house and this - and of course, one of the rules is that you never go upstairs. 36 |
