Show LLOYD MCCLEARY ugu t 28 2001 JOE: A 28 year-old Lieutenant Colonel? LLO: In the Army I was a First Lieutenant at 21, and you couldn t get a commis ion today until after you're 21. JOE: Well, currently 21. LLO: Well, yeah. JOE: But that's very rare because of the lieutenant commander in today's Army is around 56 years old. LLO: Your kidding? That old? It takes that long to get a promotion, huh? I thought that I had - well, immaterial, but he looked very young. They had a picture of him in one of these newsletters. That was my regimental commander. That's Colonel Loungo, 222"d Infantry. He was a graduate of Annapolis. JOE: And he became an Army officer? LLO: Yeah. He got sea-sick and he had his commission, but he didn't want to stay in the Navy so they put him in the Army. Then- you know, a lot of crazy things- the platoon leader that I had, Lieutenant Shaw, had been a chief in the Navy before World War II. JOE: Really? LLO: He was a career serviceman in the Navy and when his term was up, he left the Navy and enlisted in the Army because he wanted to fight. JOE: Okay. LLO: And he ended up as a Lieutenant. He went to OCS, became a second lieutenant. And then he got killed in Europe and I took his place. Lieutenant Shaw. Well, I don't 32 |
