Show WILLI URE J U R 22 2003 Then, if you got in trouble and got separate from the group it was also my responsibility to navigate back to our home base. BEC: You say that position was called a togg ... ? WIL: A togglier. Yeah, toggle, you know. I used it to drop the bombs. BEC: Toggle, like you "toggle" something. WIL: Yes. BEC: I've not ever heard that term before. WIL: I hadn't either, until they hung it on me (laughs). BEC: Wow, thirty-one missions. That's a lot and then, to survive. WIL: Yes. We had some pretty rough ones, and we had some milk runs. We'd just go over and come back. BEC: Let me go back to all your training days in the United States. Do you have any experiences that you remember about that, which stand out in your mind? WIL: We spent quite a bit of time just waiting and going to school. When I was going to school in St. Louis, Missouri, I thought that was a nice place. I stayed there for six months. I went through radio school. When I was in the aviation cadet program, I completed everything up to basic flying. Then we had a spring with a lot of storms so we didn't have much time to do catch up with flying and I lost out. They washed me out for retrogression. BEC: Because you couldn't get enough flying hours in flight? WIL: That's right. Well anyway, I'm glad it happened that way. BEC: Oh, are you? 7 |
