Show WILLIS URE J AR 22 200 WIL: Well I worked for about a year and went to the University of Utah. During that time, during 1941, war was declared. Then in 1942, I joined the Air Force. Well it was the United States Army Air Force, then. BEC: The Army Air Corps? WIL: Well, it was the Army Air Force when I got in it, because a corps is a smaller unit. BEC: I see. So what course of study were you pursuing at the university? Did you have a plan of what you wanted to study? WIL: Oh, yes. I wanted to go into engineering, but I was just taking general courses for the first two years up there. Then, after the war, with the GI Bill, I was able to complete my engineering degree. BEC: How soon after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor did you sign up? WIL: Well, I went to school for two years up at the U. That took me into 1942. In the spring of' 42, I joined the United States Army Air Force. BEC: Why did you choose the Air Force? WIL: Well, I was fascinated by flying. That's the big reason. BEC: You had never flown before? WIL: No. BEC: On what date were you inducted? WIL: Well, I joined in March and I was on reserve until about October. Then in October ('42), I went into the Air Force. BEC: Where did you first report? WIL: I went down to San Antonio Aviation Cadet Center. From there, I went to Tulsa Oklahoma to primary flight school. From there, I went to Strother Field in Winfield, 5 |
