Show TANLEY G. MITH Janua 1 2 02 w r operating, and had been flying as copilots for some time we did shar th fir t pil t tim . We became first pilots, but we didn't have the opportunity to manage a crew. WIN: So, where did you go for your final training in multi-engine? STA: After we graduated in March 1944 we were up at Hammer Field near Fresno for just a week or two until they had a place for us. And we went to Ardmore for crew training. First, we went back out to Lincoln to get a crew together, but were just there for a day or two. WIN: And that's where you met .. ? STA: That's where I met Bailey, Frank Donald Bailey, from Evergreen Avenue, Salt Lake City. Then we went from there to Ardmore for what was called transition training in operating aircraft. WIN: What airplane was that? STA: That was the B-17. That was an interesting time, as I remember, because the big question was when D-Day was going to occur. We had a very interesting intelligence officer there who used to tell us at briefings-he'd say, "This invasion is going to happen between the first and the tenth of June." And he said, "You can count on it." He said, "The moon is going to be right and everything else. The tide will be right." He said, "It's going to happen." WIN: When was this? ST A: This was in-let's see, we graduated in March. We got down to Ardmore probably about the last week in March. Of course, things were building up there, and he wasn't a long way away from the actual happening. But I know at least a week ahead he fixed that pretty well right on that span. WIN: I hope there weren't a lot of German spies lurking around when he was telling you. 15 |
