| Abstract |
Norley Hall (b. 1925) recalls his childhood in rural Utah and listening to the news about Pearl Harbor when he was in his first year of high school. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines because they had the shortest training period and he wanted to get into the war quickly. He received engine room training in California and ended up on a ship transporting troops from Seattle to the Aleutian Islands. He later went from San Francisco to New Guinea on a liberty ship. He spent the remainder of the war in the Pacific. 86 pages. |

NH: I loved to sit out on the deck at night and watch the flying fi h. u uld tuall see-it looked like sparks when they'd come out of the water the fluorescence and ... BB: The fish themselves actually had a ... or was it a reflection? NH: Well, the fish where they splashed the water the water would be florescent and also they had-we had two or three occasions of what they call St. Elmo's fire, which is a type of lightning that plays around your masts on your ship. That was quite interesting to watch. It looks like snakes up there. BB: Yeah, I mean, it glows around the edges? NH: Yes. It actually moves around in the masts, and the stays on the masts, and the stacks on the ship. BB: Really? What color? Is there a color to it? NH: Yes, kind of a yellowish-orange color. BB: Interesting and you saw it a couple of times, did you? NH: Yes, two or three times. BB: Yeah I haven't heard that before on-I've heard it in aircraft in the sky, of course, but not ' in the ... interesting. Well, let's get into ... NH: Sinking? BB: Yeah, I guess the sinking of the ship, exactly. You said it was in December? NH: Yeah, December 10, as I recall. BB: you have-what is that? About a 55th anniversary coming up here real soon, right? NH: Yeah, such as it is. 60 |
